What site do you use to download music these days? I'm reluctant to try any of the sites like Napster or RealRhapsody or what ever 'cause I had a bad time with WinMX..I don't want to infect my new computer with spyware, so I thought I'd ask for some input and see what might be the best (safest) way to go!

Hey, I'm not at all adverse to paying for the music. I buy CD's all the time. In some ways that work for me I want to be able to create my own custom line ups. I'm asking which sites are considered safe to use...that's all.
there's thousands of free live shows available legally for downloading at http://www.archive.org/audio/etree.p...5db5dbfa2addf8
I like Itunes(Apple).
.99 cents per song- well worth it. You buy the songs you want and avoid paying 18.00 for a CD that only has 1 or two good songs on it(usually pop stuff).
I've been using the new Napster. .99 per song with an "all you can eat" option for 9.99. I beleive there are restrictions though (a new technology that has you 'check in' your songs once monthly or they will become unplayable)? Sounds interesting.
Rhapsody was voted #1 in PC World for music downloads. My buddy uses it and loves it. Here is an article that compares available services:

I used to use iMesh, but the amount of Spyware it allowed onto my computer actually resulted in the crash of my harddrive, and I lost my entire MP3 collection. (Irony? Poetic Justice??? =)
I use Ares now. (Go to www.download.com and search for Ares). It's a spyware-free P2P program(no, really!) and allows you to search for pretty much anything. My rule of thumb is to download MP3s from albums I'm a little leery of, and if I really dig them, I buy the CD and rip it to my computer.
It's also handy for learning covers for the band. I download the MP3, learn it, and delete it. If I didn't have access to download the MP3, I'd probably just borrow the CD from one of my bandmates (if they had it) and would rip the song from there to make my "Covers to learn" CD.
I would encourage everyone to use Musicmatch or iTunes for buying singles (especially anthing in the Top 40) to encourage the Industry to devote more time and energy to artist development, rather than releasing an album of filler to push one single.

"Word."
Since I have 1,000 cds and have little use for ANY music that get's produced anymore, I do buy the discs that I think are worthwhile, I mainly d'l torrents from EZT and also get some hard to find stuff from usenet, in the binaries.
I recently got the top 100 hits from 1986 from usenet...I dont' think I could have found them anywhere else, or known what the hell they were...some deeeep cuts there.
IRC! Totally the best place for music and everything else in fact. Check it out.
